The giant John McAfee passed away on June 23rd.
The internet entrepreneur turned fugitive murder suspect turned Libertarian Party candidate turned crypto–shill was found dead in a Catalan jail cell shortly after authorities agreed to extradite him to the United States on tax evasion charges. Depending on who you ask, he either committed suicide or was murdered. He was a legendary poster and his contribution to the culture will be missed. McAfee descended(mcafee 4/26/21) into madness, or always existed in it, but he was often correct and often correct early. Ransomware and cyberattacks and cryptocriminals were his cause célèbre and the man who wore white hats and black hats saw it all from The Grey.
Afghanistan
The 20 year war in Afghanistan is now over. As General Austin Miller said in his departing remarks, “Our job is just not to forget.” The lessons learned from the conflict will be different based on the curriculum or ideology you follow. The United States’ involvement with the country dates back to Warren G. Harding (Henry Kissinger was two months old when Harding died in office). A 50 year period of fruitful relations prevailed, depending on who you ask; hundreds of millions of dollars of assistance and aid was sent to Afghanistan by the United States – probably less than half of what the Soviets were sending – and little oil was found. After the Shah of Iran was overthrown, Jimmy Carter initiated Operation Cyclone with $500,000 to the CIA for aid towards the Islamist Afghani insurgents against the beaucoup coup Soviet puppet regime. Charlie Wilson’s War was born. Relations with Pakistan improved. The Soviet Vietnam. After a decade the USSR withdrew (Lina Khan would be born two weeks later). The Berlin Wall fell and the Gulf War followed. Afghanistan was part of the coalition.
A decade later 9/11 happened. 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi. The Islamist Afghani insurgents refused to hand over Osama Bin Laden. A decade later Bin Laden would be killed in Pakistan. Mission Accomplished as Obama withdrew from Iraq. Two years later we were back. Depending on who you ask the war in Iraq is over. We’ve talked about Kurdistan. They’re preparing for the inevitable. We’ve talked about the House of Saud. Now the war in Afghanistan is over. Depending on who you ask.
BAAI
The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) is a rival to Google and OpenAI in setting the standards and operating the trolley (link) for evolving applications of AI technological advances. Beijing has a lot of big and fast trolleys. We’ve talked about GPT-3. BAAI’s Wu Dao is ten times as big. Like Terminator vs Terminator 2. Maybe FAAMG are the underdog. Data is data and when the data is clean it can put yOODA half step ahead when it matters.
Tangping
America is at least gaining ground somewhere in the culture war by exporting a unique flavor of our brand of Individualist Anarchism.
Five years ago, Luo Huazhong discovered that he enjoyed doing nothing. He quit his job as a factory worker in China, biked 1,300 miles from Sichuan Province to Tibet and decided he could get by on odd jobs and $60 a month in savings. He called his new lifestyle “lying flat.”
This is a thing in the West. A dividend of privilege.
“I have been chilling,” Mr. Luo, 31, wrote in a blog post in April, describing his way of life. “I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong.”
Things escalated.
Mr. Luo’s blog post was removed by censors, who saw it as an affront to Beijing’s economic ambitions. Mentions of “lying flat” – tangping, as it’s known in Mandarin – are heavily restricted on the Chinese internet. An official counternarrative has also emerged, encouraging young people to work hard for the sake of the country’s future.
Esports are the future. Skip the latte. Agile asynchronous living.
To make ends meet, Mr. Ding gets paid to play video games and has minimized his spending by doing things like cutting out his favorite bubble tea. Asked about his long-term plans, he said: “Come back and ask me in six months. I only plan for six months.”
Time is a flat circle and depending on who you ask so is the earth; the tangping counterculture doesn’t quite have the swagger of Spicoli but there are some alignments the demographic dwindlers at the tail of the one-child policy have with both the baby boomers and the Gen Z zoomers. Generation Alpha is already here and they are machines.
In 2014, he found a job as a product inspector in a factory but didn’t like it. He quit after two years and took on the occasional acting gig to make ends meet. (In 2018, he played a corpse in a Chinese movie by, of course, lying flat.)
Today, he lives with his family and spends his days reading philosophy and news and working out. He said it was an ideal lifestyle, allowing him to live minimally and “think and express freely.” He encourages his followers, who call him “the Master of Lying Down,” to do the same.
Just another Individualist Anarchist Transcendentalist who didn’t make it in showbusiness. There is time yet.
Evergrande
Suspension of Binance withdrawals in the United Kingdom and elsewhere may be a crescendo of the wave that public offerings and profits by cryptocurrency related platforms are riding. Media attention and legal investigations and indictments and fines and fraud and assassinations and Crohn’s disease are causing people to get icy and freeze out some of the bad actors and evangelists. We’ve talked about Tether and Tish. And SPACs. The wind is still whipping but the water is getting cold and some people are flying too close to the sun. Fintwit wants to know what is backing the stablecoins. Gobs of commercial paper but no one knows what it is. Evergrande Group is potentially the largest real estate company in the world but has missed some bill payments this year. Bills are different than Bonds. Do commercial bills count as commercial paper? Smells (tracy screenshot) close enough. Like rotting fish. Can the whales escape the boiling sea before hell freezes over? Feeling lucky Willy?

Welcome to the first edition of 13 Items. I don’t really know what 13 Items is yet except that I expect to choose them. I considered coming up with 13 core values to really come out the gate committing to the bit, but rather than put myself in a box my hope is that at times it will be (though not limited to) informative, interesting, snarky, cynical, pithy, sarcastic (though depending on who you are it may be more sardonic). The schedule is yet to be determined. Maybe weekly? Daily seems more than I should be expected to maintain. Monthly seems like a good pace for the 30,000 foot view. Go much longer than that and you are liable to get confused and forget what direction you are going or what you had for breakfast… I know I was outside (nyc outdoor dining only link)…
Bitcoin
Satoshi Nakamoto, whoever that may be, published a paper to a niche cryptography mailing list (is that what this is?) in 2008 outlining a digital currency based on an open source reusable proof-of-work system, whatever that may be… In 2009 someone – presumably Nakamoto but who knows who (link) or what (link) that is anyway so whatever – our “Hero” (times of London link) started mining (roblox link) for bitcoin and discovered(link)/generated(link)/conjured(link) the “Genesis Block.” If it sounds like a DragonballZ YA fantasy novel that’s because it kinda is (links to bitcoin bros). In 2010, infamously (papa John), someone bought pizza with 10,000 bitcoins, proving that the barter system does actually work (paperclip trade link). That seemed to be enough for our Hero because he decided to silently hang up his cypherpunk goggles (steampunk link) and anonymously float off into immortality on his Golden Parachute of about one million bitcoins. According to “the blockchain” those coins have not been touched since. That parachute looks more like a Ununtrium Solar Sail at this point…
There are dozens of very well done stories and explanations of what Bitcoin is and how it works and why it works and the technology behind the digital alchemy and the psychology behind the retail investor and the (link). There had been attempts at similar “E-gold” projects in the past. The proof-of-work framework has been given much credit for Bitcoin’s adoption and resiliency(bacteria frozen in melting ice). “Miners” are periodically rewarded with a “block” of bitcoins for
the only problem is that there is only one “block” that is given out to one “miner.” It would be like going down into a coal mine with your abacus
Rise, Fall, Rise
Sentiment – it means nothing. Technology explanation. Fed.
Predictions. Mcafee. Lloyd/Jamie. I have a friend of a friend who is going out to dinner with someone who covers Bitcoin for Fidelity. He says it could go to $100k.

Tesla
Background of Tesla growth. Funding secured 420 announcement. Say what you will about the SEC. (Mark Cuban/Mcafee). Walls seemed to be closing in (cello) with lack of funding and pressure to meet the astronomical expectations.
Post funding crush, risks still exist. Insider trading in re Batteries and Rivian-esque lies. Matt Levine.
Comparison vs scale of Ford. Levine quote. When the funding crunch existed vs grew 2 fords in one day.
To try and keep myself from co-opting Matt’s (link) schtick (link) entirely (link) I will avoid going into the mechanics and implications of a stock split… But essentially (I can’t help myself) it should mean nothing and does mean nothing and with the evolution of the brokerage industry following Robinhood like the Pied Piper (I told you I couldn’t help myself) from $0 trade commissions (link to lie (sorta)) to fractional share purchases (so you can buy .0001 BKS-A with the cash you saved making coffee from home (link)) a stock split means even less than it ever has before. A stock split means nothing! Sorta.
Addition to the index. Big institutional money who holds and tracks all the constituents of all sorts of indices. Though many big institutional names have been buying Tesla (and uber/airbnb/wework links) for years in the private markets to much consternation. This is the difference between passive and active management (link to article on no benefit) – the further you get away from tracking the index (by for instance being underweight a certain stock (norges bank) or overweight a certain industry (crypto etf)) the more “active” or discretionary a strategy is being run (whether you realize it or not (link to retail)). And active managers get paid much higher fees (deshaw 3/30 link) because its hard! (link to article on no benefit again)
Anyway with its addition to the index Tesla will be the 6th biggest company in the index on day one. usually you sneak in from the bottom of build you way up but timing is everything. Index providers saying I don’t make the rules I just enforce them (the rules are just… there… and its probably easier to just create something new than do a hatchet job (no editor drama substack glenn) on the stone (or gold? (gold link)(Ron Paul)) tablets the 10 commandments are on.
Chinese sales of electric cars. In Europe competition is killing Tesla. Rivian aint dead yet. (link for renewed terms with GM). Other electric car companies (NIO?) (Podcast and CNBC interview where he was talking over everyone 1/12.)
Maybe none of this matters. Maybe like Bitcoin or the South Sea Company there is a confluence (link – what is confluence of events from? a conspiracy of sorts?) of events where normal people are timing the market and correctly identifying the future stewards (Stewart family of Britain pun) of transportation, energy, and M3(investopedia link) and cracking the code to multi-generational passive wealth and income (England again). I don’t necessarily disagree; I am hoping 13 Items is the path to that for me (substack link) Whats the opposite of a black swan(UK swan)? If you know swipe up (pattern link) and let me know.
I am not going to let myself dive in too deep into the theory that the early Middle Ages were a fabrication – not just Merlin and Lancelot – but an invented 300 year mythology crafted for a secret Papal (Otto III) propaganda calendar conspiracy revealed 600 years later during another Papal (Gregory XIII) propaganda calendar campaign and discovered 400 years after that by a largely discredited Bavarian pseudohistory self-publisher in 1991… but its on my radar. Of course time is faster now than it was in the dark ages with globalization and the lasers and the hyperloop and whatnot. People have been concerned with the dangerously inflationary policies of central banks since at least 2009…
The music supposedly stops at some point, but when you think about the infinitesimal scale of a human life relative to the history of the planet (link)or the galaxy(link) or the universe(link) it does seem like we could do this forever if we try. This summer it will be 50 years since Bretton Woods and everything is fine… Even if we weren’t trying to keep bubbles from popping we have for generations proven how insatiable the American spirit can be regardless of the potential consequences(nate robinson). Without any tricks(1mdb) or devaluations(weimar) or manipulation(Libor) some of these songs can go on a really long time!
On the other hand, the scale of the American empire relative to other empires in human history is also infinitesimal(china link). It would be wise for us to heed the suggestion of another Otto and learn from the mistakes and experiences of others in history when we can like rather than bumble along without a sense of context. The great German certainly would have looked to the writings of an VP to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in his efforts confederation
The Iron Chancellor certainly would have looked to the writings of other contemporary and historical statesmen to inform his efforts towards German Confederation in the late 1800s. The United States part of the U.S.A. now seems like a matter of form (or maybe not), but the relationship between the Federal government and the 17 United States was very different at the turn of the 19th Century. At the center of political debate was the question of
A minor scandal saw Aaron Burr – who found himself as Thomas Jefferson’s Vice President after an Electoral College tie in the Presidential Election of 1800 (link, Kamala quip) – essentially in exile from Gotham on a murder rap (link) after some gunplay on Port Imperial Boulevard. His political career seemed to clearly be over (link) but he would serve out the rest of his term. Only 21 states have the distinction of being a Presidential birthplace. Aaron Burr was nearly the first from New Jersey but it would take until Bismarck’s time for Grover Cleveland to represent the Garden State (and he did it twice link). Had Spiro Agnew declined to resign he would have been the first Terripin President (talk about drain the swamp, link) The third member of what we could call the First New York Triumvirate – as much because of the shifting relationships and cooperation between its members as the like the paradigmatic Romans but because in post-Revolutionary New York City there were three concentric circles of power – would rise from
only 21 states have

What is the problem with having Trump on Shopify? Is it an issue if he sells more red hats? Who cares? It is just trying to push a certain political point of view that is held by millions of Americans into some dark area as an attempt to say that you aren’t part of society.
Well put.
It is impossible – or should be(link to tweet from neo) – to consider the Parler issue without reckoning with the intersection of this Antitrust question with Section 230 liability shields(coward 230 excuse shutdown link). The unfortunate reality for anyone interested in either of those topics is that a third Parler problem poisons the whole case study for everyone – a First Triumvirate of Parler Problems of sorts. Parler – new Twitter – is (or was) totally bootleg. It is even more bootleg than old Twitter and they (link/quip). Aside from the Section 230 and the Antitrust and whatever else you find to be upset about from what’s here AWS and the Technonatti had some good security and privacy reasons to shut Parler down. It seems to have been a dumpster fire in many ways and that’s all that matters. Maybe Parler will survive, or win their legal case, or rise up from the ashes like a Phoenix(Harry Potter phoenix). Maybe there will be a Second Triumvirate of Parler Problems down the line for me to fuss about. Maybe! SPAC
Or maybe not. Maybe you want to create your own new Twitter. (coastal Carolina oline seniors) Or maybe better yet you want to find the new Twitter and buy it on the cheap. Once you find IT, the “Next Big Thing” (link bitcoin cash), the 100x’er (link to VC), ITs gonna go quick so you better have your money right (link). Like a Manhattan apartment (link to rents dropping) you gotta have your checks written and your papers together and your credit freezes removed. Its best if we (we being our new Special Purpose Acquisition Conspiracy Signal chat) keep our element of surprise on the cutthroat competition out there. It seems like everyone has a SPAC now and everyone is fishing for a Narwal – the Unicorn of Poseidon. If you are a big name SPACaptain like Chamath Palihapitiya or Bill Ackman I want to get on your boat! Can you imagine the deal flow those guys get? Does Steve Cohen have a SPAC? No? Not that we know of? Maybe? There are rumors that Johnny Depp is putting together a crew…

In general it seems like the best way to make big(UK Oil trader link) money (besides starting a niche cryptocurrency newsletter) is to sell a company to “the market”. I hope he’s Hygge.

TELEVISION
There is more talent off cabal news than is on it at this point. If I am picking my Starting 5(bill Simmons era debate basketball book) or my Mount Rushmore (link to Trump Mt. Rushmore meme) to defeat the invading alien(bogdan) Monstars I would much rather send out X than Y. Even Piers Morgan who got deplatformed or deported or something. Who cares? My Two Cents? (Larry King link) if you want to take King Larry from King James are you going to swear on the King James Bible that you’ve got more than Kate Moss’s eel dealer(eel link/parasite link) and the Uni decision for Prince Andrew’s newest babykins? Because its going to take a hell of a lot more than that to keep Larry (Larry King) O’Brien (Brien Ohlberman tweet), and the rest of the cancel culture martyrs in a shallow grave if the fate of civilization as we know it is literally hanging in the balance? Or maybe we should take a step back and recognize the Krasserstein brothers are yes obviously the aliens (Men in Black link)? *Blue Origin link* Earthlings vs Aliens is exactly the unifier that America needs right now. Someone besides Trump maybe seeing as he allegedly got the second most votes of all time. I know very little about them but The Krassersteins seem as hatable as anyone at first glance. Or what about the Musk brothers? The names in this family! (electric eel shock) And not even the one that you’re thinking about! Kimbal may very well get his own Item soon. There is unlimited potential for supervillany when you control the roads and the pipes and the Sun and Space and Mars and a “megaton” or whatever of options(link) and warrants (link (crime?)) and emeralds only the laws of physics can temporarily impair you (where were going there are no roads)
Great Scot! There goes that John Law again. Strolling down the Lane with that Big Ole Mississippi scheme repackaged for what its 4th time? (Chamath space count link) It never ceases to amaze me that’s working again but ill tell you its workin (link to bowl game). If you count the Raiders, 5th time. I count the Raiders and love that they are in Vegas. I hear Mark Davis might be part of that Johnny Depp group. Just the crumbs you start to pick up the more people you meet if you travel in the right circles (link/quip). Food and Beverage or Gaming focus yeah. Actually way overweight crypto already so that’s probably a pass for them. I sorta know these guys from around (Reno creep) I can touch base with some 2nd connections.
Is Johnny Depp cancelled? He got cancelled by J.K. Rowling but does anyone care about what she has to say anymore? (link to lawyer leaking her pseudonym) She got cancelled too I think it had something to do with Dumbledore being inexplicably but sure, obviously(?) gay or something. If I had to guess/remember I would say both of the actors who played Dumbledore were I think probably gay so those dots connect that all makes sense to me. I still see nerds playing quidditch in the park if I go for a walk or something outdoorsy like that. They don’t seem like they would care one bit which bathroom Dumbledore used but maybe that’s just because they were raised on Harry Potter and learned to be tolerant of everyone – even muggles. A lot of people have read the Harry Potter books which is a good thing. The bad thing is I think a large amount of people have only read the Harry Potter books. Though the book is set in England, I am mostly talking about Americans (Jeeves and Wooster link). The extended universe I include as Harry Potter books even if he isn’t the main character or even appear at all in those books. I don’t think I need to make that disclaimer but I don’t know maybe. I am like an anthropologist on these walks this is a foreign subculture to me. Well I read all the books. J.K. Rowling actually came to my school on a book tour. I couldn’t understand anything she said through her accent as she read an exerpt aloud in the auditorium. I was the only kid in my class who didn’t order a signed copy but I really couldn’t understand what she was talking about and its not like everyone had read the books then. I previously had a teacher who was from Ireland so I understood that English was being spoken but in an odd way. In some places they spell color as colour. It wasn’t Greek to me (Spiro link greek yogurt). I was far too concerned about not being able to speak all the Englishes to notice which bathroom she used or get her 1997 opinions on a variety of social and geopolitical issues but its a shame because I’m sure there would have been something problematic in there. if only I could remember… (amazon echo crime link) I don’t think J.K. Rowling is cancelled – last I checked she was still on AWS. So she is not cancelled but who cares about her anyway? (jk Rowling vs queen of England wealth). I saw most of the movies too so I guess I mean foreign like Canada foreign. Not that foreign. California is more foreign probably. Johnny Depp might be cancelled. His debts aren’t cancelled (bankruptcy link) so we might have to wait for that to be sorted out until the PayPal Gang can comfortably hunt him for sport. His accountant could have fucked him or maybe Johnny just shit the bed – who knows? (Bezos vest link)
But I digress.
Trump and Larry King and Alex Jones and Steve Bannon and Bill O’Riley I think are the Starting 5. Bannon falls off the Mount Rushmore he only cracked the starting lineup because of Breitbart but he recently stole/borrowed a Chinese political dissident’s megayacht and he’s financially flexible thanks to his buddy Jerry so he may actually have the highest ceiling from here. Milo with some great energy off the bench, but they ALL have energy (trump energy reserves quote). Thats the point. The cancelled team is going to destroy whatever Monstars get thrown out there. Or the Krassersteins and the Musks with Arnie Hammer(Arnie hammer leak again? link) running the point.
The Winkelvii. Thats the logical progression. Obviously. They aren’t limited by the laws of physics. They are proven correct by the power of math one increasingly difficult to find Dragonball at a time. Are you going to bet against math? (yang politico odds). You zoom out and Mars is just part of a galaxy that is part of a marble in the Winkelvii marble collection. It took Arnie Hammer 2X to play the Winkelvii and even Arnie Hammer 2X was as foreign to the Winkelvii aura as L.A. is to Canada. I would fear them but resistance is futile(scifi space link). I already am being deconstructed and reconflagstituted on Palentir (hosted by AWS) servers by Thiel for even mentioning the most dangerous game, but as I was raised on not only Harry Potter(blood boy?) but also Cowboy Beebop (blood boy?) and the Patriot Act, I don’t mind so much because this is all I know(20 years in Afghanistan). I think I would still prefer to have my atoms vaporized on a distributed network by those nice boys on the crew team from a school outside Boston (Harvard dropping in rankings)… than have my ribs barbecued and my blood drained (blood boy) and my organs harvested (Uyghur link) and my brain sucked until pimped (link) out, strung (link) out, fat (link), horny (ted cruz), my ability to think amputated
if only Sheldon could bid on him. He would give Trump Wayne Diamond’s dressing room. Republicans are at a turning point with Adelson dying and Trump retiring but not really. I wonder what the Triumvirate in Las Vegas is looking like these days… IThere is always money in Food(link closed restaurants) and Beverage(alcohol consumption link), or Gaming(twitch stream), or the Banana Stand (link banana ice cream tropical fruit)… Until there isn’t… Is Dave Portnoy (Dave 40 link) in exile on the East Coast or is he one of those vertical integration (merger announcement) thinkers (Dave/musk tweet) building a separate decentralized(online gambling growth stat link) empire east of the Mississippi (stock price link)? Jose Canseco member of the triumvirate. (link to fight) Link to location(location).
